Reverence and Remembrance
A personal journey though the loss and grieving of loved ones has encouraged a re-evaluation of my own understanding of death as an event that contributes to a sense of place.
The concepts of reverence and remembrance play a significant role in place making through their physical manifestations - those familiar symbolic constructions which we as a society rely on as links to our past, touchstones in our present, and suggestions of a future unfolding around us. They inform and, in turn, are informed by their surroundings. They have a relationship with the passage of time that demonstrates their continued cultural significance, or the loss thereof, and as a result they document evolution in dominant societal values. The images in this series challenge our physical relationship with the subjects to force a re-examination of our own emotions and values.
The exploration of this content has deepened my understanding of the complex relationship I have with values such as honour, sacrifice, and duty and how these values shape my understanding of my community, my role within my community, and how my community has shaped me.
I hope that these images lead you to discover new emotions and cause you to question your values and beliefs. From this introspection, I trust you find opportunity.
Enjoy the journey.
